The research article "Tissue-based map of the human proteome" has reached a major milestone with more than 10,000 citations according to Google Scholar.

The article, published in Science in 2015, is thus one of the most cited publications in the field of life science from Europe during the last decade. In the article, Uhlen and co-authors presented a map of the human proteome based on an integrated omics approach that involved expression profiling combined with tissue microarray-based immunohistochemistry, to achieve spatial localization of proteins down to the single-cell level.

The human secretome was explored together with, the membrane proteome, the druggable proteome, the cancer proteome, and the metabolic functions across all major human tissues and organs. A freely available interactive resource was presented as part of the Human Protein Atlas portal (www.proteinatlas.org), offering the possibility to explore the proteomes in tissues and organs and to analyze tissue profiles for specific protein classes.

The Tissue Atlas data and resource has paved the way for numerous novel discoveries and ongoing large-scale efforts studying the human building blocks in different tissues and single cell types.
