Neuronal PAS domain protein 2 (NPAS2) is a transcription factor that works in the brain to generate and maintain mammalian circadian rhythms. However, its RNA levels are moderate to high in a variety of peripheral tissues in the human body. In the mouse, broad nuclear localization in subsets of neurons throughout the entire brain is seen, with the olfactory bulb, cerebral cortex, thalamus and hypothalamus exhibiting particularly strong neuronal nuclear staining. Occasionally, the cytoplasm of neurons in some medullar/pontine nuclei shows moderate immunostaining too.
