Gamma aminobutyric acid receptor subunit alpha 1 is highly enriched in the human nervous system. In the mouse, moderate/strong-intensity diffuse/synaptic-type immunolabeling of synaptic fields is observed in multiple forebrain regions. The staining is particularly strong in the entire olfactory bulb, neocortex, amygdala nuclei, hippocampus, hypothalamus, lateral septum and some thalamic nuclei. The staining is usually weak or missing in the brainstem, with the exception of the moderate-intensity labelling of the substantia nigra, periaqueductal gray matter as well as the dorsal gray matter around the fourth venricle, including the parabrachial-locus coeruleus regions.
